In East London, older adults facing disabilities and social isolation were welcomed with open arms by the Maria Luisa de Moreno International Foundation with the event “A Day for Older Adults.” This gathering created a vibrant and heartfelt space where, inclusion, companionship and joy, took centre stage.
The event was made possible in collaboration with Age UK and was designed to uplift those who often go unnoticed, providing them not just a break from routine, but also a reminder of their value and place in society. With a specially planned program, the day offered entertainment and meaningful participation.
The celebration began with a lively dance and music performance that brought the rhythms of the 50s, 60s and 70s back to life, stirring memories and smiles among the attendees. The upbeat atmosphere continued with various recreational activities and many gifts that created moments of joy.
Following this, a recreational “word scramble” activity introduced the values of generosity and honesty, sparking reflection and conversation around these essential themes. Those who took part in the game received gifts in recognition of their mental sharpness and participation. Additionally, to support physical wellbeing and stimulate memory, exercises involving movement and mental agility were carried out.
As a gesture of appreciation and to promote self-care, each guest received a gift set including a sun hat, sunscreen, and a portable water bottle — practical items carefully selected with their wellbeing in mind.
The event concluded with a traditional Afternoon Tea, allowing everyone to socialize and enjoy a warm, familiar tradition. Many of the attendees expressed deep gratitude, highlighting that it was the best day of their lives and asking “when the Foundation would host another event”. Their words and smiles confirmed the day’s success: they felt seen, celebrated, and valued. In this way, Dr Maria Luisa continues to inspire acts of solidarity and kindness throughout the community.
The Foundation expresses its most sincere gratitude to Age UK, to all the volunteers whose time and effort made this day possible, and to all the donors whose contribution enables causes like these to continue.
A Day for Older Adults was more than just an event, it was a declaration that no one should feel alone, and that every life matters, at every age.
